Carter Matthews writes for readers who use technology every day but want to understand what it is really doing to their jobs, their businesses and the way they make decisions. His books are grounded in practical experience rather than hype. Each one starts from a question he has had to answer for himself, whether as a finance manager, an IT manager, a business owner or simply someone trying to make sense of a fast-changing world.
AI tools now draft essays, answer questions and make recommendations with complete confidence. The Answer That Never Knows argues that however capable these systems become, the moral weight of a decision still belongs to people. How Artificial Intelligence Is Reshaping Trust, Cheating, and Learning takes the same concern into the classroom, examining why AI detectors can't be trusted as the only evidence of cheating and what schools should do instead.
World Wide Web of Lies: The Unbalanced Equation looks at the systems that sit between a business and its customers: search rankings, advertising policies, payment platforms and AI tools. Together they quietly decide which businesses get seen. It is written for anyone running a business online who has wondered why visibility can disappear overnight.
The Great Diversification: How Becoming Adaptable Made Me Almost Unemployable turns the lens on Carter's own working life. After years spent across finance, technology, management and running his own business, he explores the irony that a broad set of skills can make someone harder, not easier, to hire.
Building The BnB follows a more hands-on project: turning an underused room into a welcoming place for guests. What began as a simple plan became a renovation, a steep learning curve and an unexpected new direction in life. It's a story for anyone weighing up a renovation or a hosting venture of their own.
Not sure where to start? If you're curious about AI, begin with The Answer That Never Knows. If you run a business online, World Wide Web of Lies is the most practical place to begin. And if your own career has refused to stay in one lane, The Great Diversification will feel familiar.
About the Author
Carter Matthews has spent much of his working life moving between finance, technology, business management and entrepreneurship, rarely following the conventional path of a single career. Along the way he has worked in different countries, gained qualifications, managed businesses, developed software and systems, built websites and continually learned whatever was needed to solve the next problem. Rather than deliberately planning to become a generalist, he gradually accumulated a broad collection of skills and experiences simply by adapting to whatever came next.
His writing reflects that same curiosity about how people, technology and modern systems actually work. In The Great Diversification, Matthews turns that curiosity towards his own career, exploring the irony of becoming increasingly adaptable while finding it increasingly difficult to fit into a job market built around narrowly defined roles. His previous books include World Wide Web of Lies: The Unbalanced Equation, How Artificial Intelligence Is Reshaping Trust, Cheating, and Learning, and The Answer That Never Knows.
